Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System, and DCS are usually used to talk one-on-one with another radio operator.

One important thing to realize is that CTCSS, and DCS don’t guarantee privacy, especially since anyone can just go to the channel you’re transmitting on and set the privacy code to whichever one you’re using. Depending on whether you’re using FRS, GMRS, or HAM you might not have access to all of the CTCSS Tones, because some are designed to only work within certain frequencies. The difference between CTCSS, and DCS is that CTCSS uses continuous tones below 300 Hz, whereas Digital Coded System (DCS) uses unique encoded words that can be used on the same channel without interference.
